Maurice (1987) dir. James Ivory

Maurice is a film by Merchant Ivory based on the novel of the same name by E. M. Forster. I watched this film on the 11th of June and I still am thinking of it today, with it's mesmerising cinematography and narrative pacing that allows the audience to meander through the life of early 20th century England; on the bridge between Victorian and Edwardian society. Honestly, I have no idea why i didn't watch it sooner. I've seen a Room with a View as I studied the book during my A-Levels and also saw the film Call Me By Your Name which Ivory adapted the screenplay for, which led me to watching this. The plot evolves around the protagonist Maurice Hall (James Wilby) and his relationships with two men, first Clive Durham (Hugh Grant) and then Alec Scudder (Rupert Graves), in the very early 1900s where homosexuality was a crime.
