painting; a re-connection
Recently I have been painting a lot more. I've been wanting to do more solid pieces as I have never really done many large pieces and just have sketchbooks and things scattered about. Here are the three pieces I have recently completed:
HOLLYWOOD II (2018)
i began this towards the end of my first year on some spare cardboard from what i collected when hunting for my box for my experimental short. i think i had this in my head for a while, if i remember
correctly, and it was inspired by another painting I did that was based on a poem my friend and i wrote for fun when we were bored in mcdonalds at 1am after a show.
The first painting began with the background, as I had a new palette knife (I'd never had one before) and I was experimenting with it and used it often to create backgrounds. I then began painting the houses with inspiration from out my bedroom window. I love how this turned out and I think it was a turning point for my painting style.
I think I did this painting (to the left) after the hollywood one. It is of my room, however I took the proportions out and added a block colour style with outlines. It's strange as I didn't know what cloisonnism was then, maybe I was inspired by works I had seen before briefly.
DOORS (2018)
I don't know how I feel about this one. I had some red paint I wanted to try out and I had been thinking about doors a lot and their representation of entrance and exit and what's behind the door and getting in (or not) through the doors.
UNTITLED (at the minute) (2018)
this piece was started when I couldn't sleep at around 2am. It's about time and how I feel like its running out and I'm never doing enough. The large circle intended to be a clock, although it looks like a sun, however I didn't want it to be obvious that it was a clock by adding the details, so I then decided to put the numbers outside the clock. The white 'stairs' were originally city buildings, however that changed with the process. The bright orange and red were used to communicate panic and warning. For the bottom part, I drew a horizon and added green for a connotation of grass and I then also added steps and a door for the same reason as the previous painting in this post.Another aspect that I decided to add was faint roman numerals using pentimento, however because this was a thing that I tried to add at the end, I didn't work as well. I wish it had been something at the beginning so then it would have been easier to paint over.
